You got to hand it to Met Éireann – when they said today’s weather would be ‘a bit crappy verging on shite’, they were spot-on. The Big Swim East Leinster Open Sea Ger 19JUNE16 19 bANNER (1024x371)Nonetheless, that pesky rain didn’t put off over 200 swimmers taking part in Greystones’ first Open Sea swim in years. The hope is to make this an annual event, Ger Kennedy and other locals having approached the Leinster Open Sea Committee in 2015 about bringing the large-scale swim back to Greystones after an absence of almost a decade. Which meant that today’s big dip was a qualifying swim for the iconic Liffey Swim (first run in 1920) and the Dun Laoghaire Harbour Swim (now in its 86th year). Big congrats to the winners. In the men’s group, it was Patrick Corkery who took first place, with Daire Corcoran and Mark Hipwell, whilst in the ladies’ group, it was Carmel Ahern in first place, followed by Claire O’Sullivan and Caroline Rice.
